Project Roadmapping

Discovering the North Star and Creating a Blueprint for a Regenerative Village

Our team was contracted to lead the community development branch and create an open-source blueprint on how to build and maintain the human element of a village of intentional communities for Nuanu: a burgeoning mega-community encompassing a new world university, wellness lab, permaculture garden, schools, recording studio, artist residencies, markets, sacred temple, festival grounds, sculpture park, lighthouse, restaurants, food court, makers lab, fabrication house, and living space for 2,000 permanent residents on 46 hectares of land.

We took on the challenge of building systems, guidebooks and developing a set of operational processes to guide the initial steps of the community project.

  • Our client, Nuanu, envisioned a village that would serve as a model for intentional communities worldwide.

  • Our goal was to develop a comprehensive blueprint that would guide the establishment and long-term sustainability of the community living at Nuanu, in various tenures, environments, and participation levels.

The Approach:

Learning from Renowned Communities and Experts:

  • We conducted 18 months of in-depth research and interviews with generous communities worldwide, other consultants, and experts in various fields related to intentional communities.

  • Collaborating with experts in governance, conflict resolution, and cutting-edge technologies, we were able to distill and synthesize what had worked, learn what to avoid, and navigate a clear path forward.

Defining Nuanu's North Star:

  • Through interviews and workshops, we facilitated discussions with the founding team to understand their vision, values, and principles.

  • Based on these insights, we crafted clear and compelling principles, missions and values statements that encapsulated Nuanu's purpose.

Developing the Blueprint:

  • By exploring successful models, we gained valuable insights into governance structures, conflict resolution techniques, and innovative technologies that could be implemented in Nuanu.

  • Leveraging the knowledge gained, we created a comprehensive operational blueprint for Nuanu, outlining the necessary processes, guidelines, and governance models to support the community's growth and sustainability.

  • The blueprint covered all aspects of communal living, including community guidelines, organizational structures and staffing, beta governance models, and member onboarding and exit processes for different capacities such as daily/event, short stay, employee/worker, and long-term build-on-site.

  • Working with other teams for implementation, we ensured cohesion across the organization.

Conclusion:

By conducting extensive research, uncovering and aligning the core values of Nuanu, and developing a comprehensive operational blueprint, we provided the necessary foundation for the community's early success. The project is moving beyond traditional sustainability, embracing a regenerative mindset and paving the way for a game-changing destination that reimagines how we live and work. Nuanu is on its way to becoming a beacon of hope, inspiring intentional communities worldwide to thrive in harmony with the environment, society, and future generations.
